Recruitment for Fall 2022

John Henderson is recruiting new graduate students to join the Visual Cognition Lab at UC Davis to begin September 2022. UC Davis is a recognized world-leader in research and education, with the university and psychology department highly ranked both nationally and internationally.

Graduate students will be members of the Perception, Cognition, and Cognitive Neuroscience (PCCN) PhD program in the Department of Psychology. Students receive at least 5 years of full funding (tuition, fees, and stipend) through a combination of research assistantships, teaching assistantships, and fellowships during their PhD program. Students interested in attention, scene perception, and related processes interact with the Visual Cognition Research group. Students interested in reading and related processes interact with the Language, Cognition and Brain Sciences group.

We currently have ongoing collaborative projects with several other labs and faculty members at UC Davis, including research on the interaction of memory and attention in real-world scenes (with Andy Yonelinas), the interaction of attention and meaning in language production (with Fernanda Ferreira), the role of prediction in aging (with Fernanda Ferreira and Tamara Swaab), the time-course of real-world scene properties as revealed by EEG (with Steve Luck), the roles of image and meaning features on attentional guidance in infants (with Lisa Oakes), and the relationship between attention and oculomotor control (with Ron Mangun). Many of these projects are funded by external grants.

The Visual Cognition Lab is located at the Center for Mind and Brain, a large and vibrant community of faculty, post-docs, and graduate students. Students in the lab also interact with the Department of Psychology, the Language, Cognition and Brain Sciences group, the Visual Cognition Research Group, the Imaging Research Center, the Center for Neuroscience, and the Center for Vision Science

Recent PhD graduates from the PCCN program have taken excellent post-doc and academic positions at Penn State, Tufts, UC Irvine, UC Santa Cruz, Rutgers, and Basque Center on Cognition Brain and Language, among others.

Application deadline for Fall 2022 admission is December 1, 2021. Online application and additional information on applying to graduate school at UC Davis is available here. Interested students are strongly encouraged to email John Henderson before applying.
